How to Fix No Sound or a Missing Audio Output Device in Windows 11

Windows 11 can lose sound in two different ways. Sometimes the speakers or headphones are still detected but the wrong output is selected. In other cases, Windows reports No audio output device is installed and the device disappears from Sound settings entirely.

Those symptoms need slightly different troubleshooting, so begin by checking whether Windows can still see the audio hardware.

1. Check the output device

Open Settings > System > Sound. Under Output, select the correct speakers, headset, monitor, or docking-station audio device. Make sure the volume is not muted.

If the device appears here, the hardware is detected. Continue with default-device and enhancement checks before reinstalling drivers.

2. Run the Windows Audio troubleshooter

Open the Get Help app and search for audio troubleshooter. Let Windows test the audio configuration and follow any recommended steps.

3. Check Device Manager

1. Open Device Manager.
2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
3. Also check Audio inputs and outputs.
4. If the device is disabled, right-click it and select Enable device.

If the expected audio controller is missing, select View > Show hidden devices, then Action > Scan for hardware changes.

4. Install the correct manufacturer driver

An audio driver can disappear or stop loading after an update. Check the PC, motherboard, dock, or sound-card manufacturer’s support page for the latest Windows 11 audio package for your exact model.

Do not install a driver from an unrelated PC just because it uses the same audio brand. Laptop vendors often customize Realtek, Intel, AMD, or other audio packages for their hardware.

5. Check the default playback device

Open Settings > System > Sound > More sound settings. On the Playback tab, select the device you want Windows to use and choose Set Default.

6. Turn off audio enhancements as a test

If the device is detected but silent or distorted, open its properties and disable available audio enhancements/effects temporarily. If sound returns, update the audio software before re-enabling enhancements.

7. Consider HDMI and docking changes

Connecting a monitor, TV, USB headset, or dock can automatically change the default output. If sound disappeared after plugging something in, check the output selector before troubleshooting drivers.

If Device Manager cannot detect the audio controller even after a restart and manufacturer driver reinstall, check BIOS/UEFI settings and hardware diagnostics supplied by the PC maker. At that point the issue may be firmware or hardware rather than a Windows sound setting.

Check whether Windows switched to another output

HDMI and DisplayPort monitors frequently expose their own audio devices. A dock, USB headset, controller, graphics-driver update, or newly connected TV can therefore become the default output without anything being wrong with the laptop speakers. If the speakers are still listed, simply selecting the correct output may solve the problem immediately.

Use the error state to guide the next step

If Device Manager shows a warning icon, open the device properties and note the numeric error code. That code is more useful than repeatedly uninstalling the same driver. If the audio controller disappears completely after a BIOS or chipset update, reinstall the platform/chipset package and the manufacturer’s audio driver in the order recommended for that PC.

For USB audio devices, also test a different USB port and remove an unpowered hub from the path. A power or hub problem can look exactly like a missing Windows audio device.
