What happens when you visit

You can read our articles without creating an account. The current site does not offer reader accounts, article comments, a newsletter subscription form or an online contact form. We do not currently run Google Analytics on the site.

Cloudflare hosts and delivers the website and helps protect it against abuse. Delivering a page involves processing connection information such as your IP address, requested URL, browser information and request time. Cloudflare may process technical logs and security information for delivery, reliability and abuse prevention. See Cloudflare’s privacy policy.

Email you send us

If you contact us by email, we receive your email address, message and any information or attachments you choose to send. Messages may pass through email forwarding and our email provider. We use this information to respond to your enquiry and manage the resulting correspondence. Please do not send passwords, recovery keys or other sensitive information.

We retain correspondence for as long as it is reasonably needed to handle the enquiry, follow up, resolve a dispute or meet applicable legal obligations. You can ask us to delete correspondence using the contact address above, subject to any obligation to retain it.

Preferences stored in your browser

The site uses local storage to remember your light or dark theme and, when you tick a troubleshooting step, which steps you have tried. These values stay in that browser and are not sent to us by these features. They remain until you change them, clear this site’s browser data, or your browser removes them. Clearing them resets your preferences and progress.

The “Did this fix it?” buttons change the guidance shown on the page; they do not submit a feedback report. Search matching runs in your browser. A search term can appear in the page URL and browser history, and can reach hosting logs if you load or share that URL. Avoid entering private information into search.

Fonts and external links

Our pages load fonts from Google Fonts. When your browser requests those files, Google receives the request and connection information, including your IP address and browser information. See Google’s privacy policy. Article images are served from our website.

Articles link to documentation and other websites. Following a link takes you to a service with its own privacy practices; this policy does not cover those external sites.

Google advertising

We use Google AdSense on selected pages. Ads may not appear on every page or visit. Google and other advertising providers may use cookies, web beacons, IP addresses and device identifiers to deliver ads, measure their performance and prevent fraud. Where permitted by your choices and applicable requirements, advertising cookies allow Google and its partners to personalize ads using visits to this website and other websites.

Your advertising and cookie choices

For visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, Google’s consent message offers Consent, Do not consent and Manage options. You can review purposes and partners, change consent choices and object to processing based on legitimate interest where offered. Simply browsing this website is not consent to personalized advertising.

Use Privacy & cookie settings to reopen the message on an advertising-enabled page. The same link is available in the footer. Availability depends on your region and whether Google’s consent service can load. If the message is blocked or unavailable, the site will not tell you that your choices were changed.

You can also manage Google ad personalization through My Ad Center, use participating providers’ opt-out tools through YourAdChoices, and manage cookies or site storage in your browser. An opt-out or refusal of personalized advertising does not necessarily remove all ads or all processing needed for permitted limited advertising, security and fraud prevention. Service providers, retention and transfers

Information is processed by the providers needed to operate the site, deliver advertising and handle email. These providers may process information in countries other than yours under their applicable terms and safeguards. Their linked privacy notices explain their processing and retention practices. Browser preferences, hosting logs, email and advertising data do not all have the same retention period.

We may also disclose information where required by law or necessary to protect legal rights and the security of the site.

Your privacy rights

Depending on where you live and which law applies, you may have rights to access, correct or delete personal information, restrict or object to processing, obtain a portable copy, or withdraw consent. Withdrawal does not affect processing that was lawful before withdrawal. You may also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
