If you use ChatGPT for work that continues over days or weeks, keeping everything in unrelated chats quickly becomes messy. Projects solve that by putting related conversations, files, sources, and project-specific instructions in one place.
Create a project
- Open ChatGPT and select Projects or New project in the sidebar, depending on your version.
- Give the project a clear name.
- Choose an icon and color if you want to identify it quickly.
A project could be a book, a product launch, a research topic, a course, a client account, or even something personal such as planning a house move.
Add the context once
Upload the documents, spreadsheets, images, or notes that belong to the work. Add project instructions using the instructions control available in your project.
For example:
Write for a technical audience. Keep instructions concise. Do not change existing product terminology. Flag anything that requires current verification.
Those instructions apply inside that project, so you do not need to repeat them in every new chat.
Bring existing chats into the project
If an older conversation belongs with the work, use its menu and choose Move to project when available. The moved chat then uses the project’s files and instructions.
Use sources, not only uploads
Projects can also use supported connected apps and project sources. Depending on your account and workspace settings, you may be able to add supported Google Drive or Slack links or use connected apps directly from a project chat.
Review project context and sharing
Review the memory, context, and sharing options available for your account before adding sensitive material. Organizing chats in a project is useful, but it is not a substitute for checking access permissions and your organization’s data rules.
Projects are useful for repeat work
The biggest advantage is continuity. Instead of rebuilding the background every Monday, you can reopen the same project, add the newest material, and continue from the context already collected there.
