How to Repair Windows 11 Without Losing Apps or Files Using Windows Update
Use the built-in Windows Update recovery option to reinstall your current Windows 11 version while keeping apps, files, and settings.

Windows 11 includes a useful recovery option that can repair damaged system files and Windows components without removing your installed apps, personal files, or settings.
It is called Fix problems using Windows Update, and it is worth trying before a reset or clean installation.
What this repair actually does
The option downloads and reinstalls the same Windows version already installed on your PC. It refreshes Windows system files and components while preserving:
- Your personal files
- Installed applications
- Windows settings
How to reinstall Windows 11 through Windows Update
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Recovery.
- Under Fix problems using Windows Update, select Reinstall now.
- Choose whether Windows should restart automatically after the repair completes.
- Select OK to begin.
Windows moves you to the Windows Update page, downloads a repair copy of the current release, installs it, and then requires a restart.
When should you use it?
This repair is particularly useful when Windows Update repeatedly fails, built-in Windows components behave incorrectly, or system files appear damaged but Windows still starts normally.
Before you start
- Connect a laptop to AC power.
- Keep the PC connected to the Internet.
- Save open work and close important applications.
- Back up irreplaceable files even though the process is designed to preserve them.
What if the option is missing?
The repair option may not appear on every managed PC, and availability can depend on your Windows version and organizational policies. In that case, first run Windows Update normally and restart the PC.
If Windows cannot boot at all, use Windows Recovery Environment instead. This feature is intended for a Windows installation that still starts.
