How to Check Your Windows 11 Version, Build, and Support Status

Windows 11 now has several active releases, and the version number matters more than it used to. It determines which features you receive, how long security updates continue, and whether your PC is approaching end of support.

Check the Windows 11 version with Winver

Press Windows Key + R.
Type winver and press Enter.
Look for the Version and OS Build shown in the About Windows window.

You can also open Settings > System > About and check Windows specifications.

What the current version numbers mean

As of September 2026, the main Windows 11 releases you may see are:

26H1: A specialized release for select new hardware. It is not offered as a normal feature update to existing 24H2 or 25H2 PCs.
25H2: The current mainstream annual feature update for most existing Windows 11 PCs.
24H2: Still supported, but Home and Pro support ends in October 2026.
23H2: Home and Pro support has already ended. Enterprise and Education have a longer support window.

How to check whether your version is still supported

If you are on Windows 11 Home or Pro, version 24H2 is very close to end of support. Go to Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install the latest feature update offered to your device.

If Windows Update does not offer a newer release, do not force-install a version just because you saw it on another PC. Hardware compatibility, safeguard holds, and the special-purpose nature of 26H1 can all affect what is available.

Build number vs version number

The version identifies the major Windows release. The OS build identifies the exact servicing level after monthly updates. When troubleshooting an update or driver problem, note both numbers before searching for a fix.

Keeping the PC on a supported release is one of the simplest ways to continue receiving security fixes and reliability improvements.
