Windows 11 26H1 vs 25H2: Why Most PCs Cannot Upgrade to 26H1

If you have seen Windows 11 version 26H1 listed online and wondered why your 25H2 PC cannot find it in Windows Update, nothing is necessarily wrong.

Windows 11 26H1 is different from the usual annual feature update.

What is Windows 11 26H1?

Microsoft describes 26H1 as a specialized Windows release built for a new generation of hardware. It first shipped preinstalled on select new PCs in 2026, including systems based on newer silicon platforms.

Unlike 24H2 and 25H2, version 26H1 is not offered as an in-place feature update to existing Windows 11 PCs.

What is Windows 11 25H2?

Windows 11 25H2 is the mainstream annual feature update for existing supported PCs. Systems moving from 24H2 can receive it through the normal servicing process, including an enablement package on compatible devices.

Should you try to install 26H1 manually?

For a normal existing Windows 11 PC, no. If your computer is running 24H2 or 25H2 and Windows Update does not offer 26H1, that is expected behavior.
