How to Create, Use, and Delete Passkeys in Windows 11

Passkeys let you sign in to supported websites and apps without typing a password. In Windows 11, a passkey can be stored on the PC and unlocked using Windows Hello—your fingerprint, face, or PIN.

Before you create a passkey

Make sure Windows Hello is configured. Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options and set up a PIN, fingerprint, or facial recognition if your hardware supports it.

Create a passkey

1. Open a website or app that supports passkeys.
2. Open its account or security settings.
3. Choose the option to create or add a passkey.
4. When Windows asks where to save it, choose the Windows device/Windows Hello option if you want the passkey stored locally.
5. Confirm using Windows Hello.

The exact wording varies by service. Your password normally remains available until that service lets you remove or disable it.

Use a passkey

On the sign-in screen for a supported service, choose Passkey, Sign-in options, or a similar option. Windows opens the security prompt and asks you to verify with Windows Hello.

View or delete saved passkeys

1. Open Settings.
2. Go to Accounts > Passkeys.
3. Find the saved passkey.
4. Open its menu and select Delete passkey if you no longer need it.

Manage passkey providers

Newer Windows 11 builds also provide Accounts > Passkeys > Advanced options, where supported passkey services can be enabled or disabled.

Remember that deleting a local passkey from Windows does not necessarily remove every passkey registered with the website. If you are retiring a device, also review the account’s own security page.
