How to Activate Windows 11 Without Entering a Product Key

Windows 11 can activate without you typing a product key when the device already has a valid digital license or another qualifying activation entitlement. That is different from activating Windows without a license.

Microsoft states that Windows 11 requires either a digital license or a 25-character product key. If the PC has neither, you need to obtain a license to activate Windows.

Check whether Windows 11 is already activated

Open Settings.
Go to System > Activation.
Check Activation state.

You may see that Windows is activated with a digital license, or with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account.

Scenario 1: Reinstall Windows 11 on a PC that was already activated

If the same edition of Windows 11 was previously activated on the device with a digital license:

Start Windows 11 Setup.
When Setup asks for a key, select I don’t have a product key.
Install the same edition that was previously activated, such as Home or Pro.
Connect the PC to the Internet after installation.

Windows should activate automatically if Microsoft recognizes the device’s digital license.

Scenario 2: A digital license is linked to your Microsoft account

Linking your Microsoft account to the digital license is especially useful before a major hardware change.

To check the link, open Settings > System > Activation. If Windows reports that the digital license is linked to your Microsoft account, the Activation troubleshooter may be able to help reactivate Windows after a hardware change.

Scenario 3: New device or motherboard with no existing license

You can still choose I don’t have a product key during installation, but that only skips entering a key during Setup. It does not create a free license.

After Windows is installed, go to Settings > System > Activation and use the Microsoft Store option to purchase a license, or enter a valid product key.

Avoid unofficial activators, KMS emulators, scripts, leaked keys, or other methods that attempt to bypass Microsoft licensing. They can create security and licensing problems and are not legitimate substitutes for a digital license or product key.

Can I change editions without a new key?
