How to Find Your BitLocker Recovery Key in Windows 11

If Windows 11 suddenly asks for a BitLocker recovery key, you need the correct 48-digit recovery key for that encrypted drive. Microsoft cannot recreate a lost key, so the first step is finding where it was backed up.

Note the Recovery Key ID

On the BitLocker recovery screen, write down the first eight characters of the Recovery Key ID. This helps you match the locked PC with the correct stored recovery key.

Check your Microsoft account

If you signed in to the PC with a personal Microsoft account, the recovery key may have been backed up to that account. From another device, sign in to your Microsoft account and open the BitLocker recovery keys page.

Match the displayed Key ID with the ID shown on the locked PC.

Check a work or school account

If the PC belongs to an organization—or was ever connected to one—the key may be stored in your work or school account. Sign in to the organization’s device portal if available, or contact the IT administrator.

Check other places you may have saved it

A printed copy
A USB flash drive
A text file saved on another device or secure storage location
Documentation supplied by whoever configured the PC

Why did BitLocker ask for the key?

Recovery can be triggered by security-sensitive hardware or firmware changes, TPM changes, some BIOS/UEFI updates, or changes to the boot environment.

What if you cannot find the key?

There is no supported bypass for BitLocker encryption. If the recovery key is unavailable and the drive cannot be unlocked through another configured protector, resetting or reinstalling Windows will remove the encrypted data.

Once you regain access, make sure the recovery key is stored somewhere you can reach even if the PC itself will not start.
