How to Enable and Use Quick Machine Recovery in Windows 11

Quick Machine Recovery is one of the most useful additions to the Windows 11 recovery toolkit. When a PC repeatedly fails to start because of a known widespread problem, Windows Recovery Environment can connect to Microsoft and look for a remediation through Windows Update.

Which Windows 11 versions support it?

Quick Machine Recovery is available on Windows 11 version 24H2 build 26100.4700 or later. On many non-managed PCs, cloud remediation is enabled by default.

How to check or enable Quick Machine Recovery

Open Settings.
Go to System > Recovery.
Select Quick machine recovery.
Turn on Quick machine recovery.
If available, also enable Automatically check for solutions.

You may also be able to choose whether Windows checks once or retries at configured intervals.

How it works when Windows will not start

After repeated startup failures, Windows can enter Windows Recovery Environment. Quick Machine Recovery then attempts to establish a network connection and checks Microsoft’s recovery service for a known fix.

If a remediation is available, Windows downloads it, applies it, and restarts the PC. If no fix exists, you still have access to the usual recovery tools.

Run Quick Machine Recovery manually

From Windows Recovery Environment, open:

Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Quick machine recovery

The PC needs a supported Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection for cloud recovery.

Important limitation

This is not a general repair tool for every broken PC. It is most useful when Microsoft has published a remediation for a known boot problem affecting multiple systems.

If BitLocker is enabled, keep your BitLocker recovery key available before working in Windows Recovery Environment.
