Unable to Sync Outlook.com in the Windows 8 Mail App — Historical Workaround
Historical Windows 8 Mail-app troubleshooting for Outlook.com account synchronization, with current status of the retired Mail app and service changes.

Historical support note: This article documents the Windows 8 Mail app and early Outlook.com transition. Windows 8 is unsupported, and Microsoft’s Windows Mail/Calendar apps later reached end of support on December 31, 2024.
In the Windows 8 era, Outlook.com accounts could sometimes fail to sync because the Mail app profile had stale credentials or because Microsoft’s account/service configuration changed during the Hotmail-to-Outlook.com transition.
Historical troubleshooting sequence
- Confirm the account can sign in at Outlook.com in a browser.
- Check the PC’s date, time, and internet connection.
- Remove the affected account from the Windows 8 Mail app.
- Restart the PC.
- Add the account again using the Microsoft/Outlook account option exposed by the app.
If the account used two-step verification and the legacy app could not complete modern authentication, an app password was historically required in some configurations. That is an account-era workaround, not a recommendation for current Outlook clients.
What no longer applies
Do not use this article as current Outlook setup guidance. Microsoft ended support for Windows Mail and Calendar on December 31, 2024 and recommends moving to the new Outlook or Outlook.com.
The original workaround is retained only to document the Windows 8 Mail behavior.
