In August 2012, Microsoft began making the final Windows 8 RTM code available to select developer and IT audiences ahead of its worldwide general availability on October 26, 2012. MSDN and TechNet subscribers were among the audiences receiving early access during the rollout.
At the time, Windows 8 represented Microsoft’s major transition to the Start screen, Windows Store apps, touch-first design, and the interface then commonly called Metro/Windows 8 UI.
This post is retained as a historical launch-era archive. The original MSDN and TechNet download instructions are no longer presented as current availability guidance.
